Greetings from the Provost!
In February 2011, the College embarked on a year-long
process to update its facilities master plan. Throughout the many meetings and
discussions, a central theme of modern, flexible learning spaces emerged. In an
effort to respond to the needs expressed by faculty during this process and
through other avenues (department meetings, Academic Council, etc.), the
College has formed the Learning Spaces Task Force.
This new group of faculty and staff will study, plan, and make recommendations on creating new learning spaces at the College. In particular, they will be examining the interface between technologies, the configuration of learning spaces, the new ways in which students learn today, and emerging pedagogies. Throughout the process, the task force will be soliciting input from faculty and staff across campus. This input will be critical as existing classrooms are upgraded and as we move toward designing new facilities.
Please continue to visit this website for information on
discussion forums, surveys, topical literature, and examples of such spaces at
other institutions.

Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
What to Expect
Task Force members will be reviewing literature and case studies during the next several months. As we move through that process, the following guiding principles will be refined. For now, a draft is provided.
- Engage campus community to develop a sustainable forum for innovative thinking and fostering adaptation of new technologies and space designs to ultimately raise expectations for all
- Develop a broad programming plan for new, dedicated building which includes necessary support staff
- Develop a vision, rules of engagement, and design principles to be used in any learning space with a balance of flexibility and standardization
- Develop an accountable process that allows users to drive space design that is aligned with institutional resources and long-range space plans
- Develop learning assessment measures to ensure design effectiveness and technology proficiency and literacy
- Develop a Teaching Fellows program
- Develop a plan and solicit support for
infrastructure improvements
